The Movement Never Realized by Dr. King Is Still Needed Today

While reading and listening to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s words again in honor of his birthday celebration, I am astounded by his prophetic view of poor people's potential political and social power. I am convinced that his plan to teach and empower the poor and powerless of the Unites States of America and the rest of the world unleash energy that we can only speculate upon. Can you imagine how different our lives would be if poor people organized and won the concessions of employment, living wages, decent affordable housing, safe affordable food, clean water, clean air, access to health care, good education and accountable politicians and fair elections? The move from exploited and disposable to powerful and demanding would make the Arab Spring look like a weak effort. It would be the greatest revolution that the world would ever know!

The power of such a mass movement of poor people would shake the foundations of all institutions that depend upon the status quo and a permanent underclass to use. It is the very reason I strongly believe that Dr. King needed to be attacked, maligned and eventually removed because surely the poor people's campaign would have worked and caught on in every nation on the planet where to quote Fannie Lou Hamer, "We are sick and tired of being sick and tired." Dr. King's focus on the poor was not a singular notion but many veteran Civil Rights activists had come or were coming to the same belief as Dr. King on the next step and direction of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. King was the best known of the activists, with the highest platform to get the message out about an to direct the movement. It also allowed him to be the greatest target. His assassination cut off the spiritual and persuasive commitment to non-violence that Dr. King could provide. His death sealed the fate of the movement that was tried by Rev. Jesse Jackson. Without Dr. King the momentum was lost. The Civil Rights movement next step in harnessing and moving the power of all poor people was never as powerful as the fight for African Americans' civil rights in America.

In honor of those non-violent warriors who are now slipping away into death we must revisit Dr. King's vision of a poor people's movement. It will like the Civil Rights Movement improve the lives of everyone in America and when it expands outward will do the same in every country on the planet. Until we all can live in dignity providing food, clothing and shelter for ourselves, our families and neighbors we must struggle against the few who have the much so that the many can have a share too.

On Thursday, July 21 I wrote the following message to my email group who had read my and my mother's escapades: My Ma...Is dying. She is at home peacefully sleeping away. It will not be very long. She is 97 and has had a glorious run. The best of me is directly apportioned to her. She is the last of the old ones in our family. All of her brothers, cousins, and peers have died. She lived to hold and catch great great grandchildren. Ma's greatest gift to me is the love of reading. For that alone I shall be forever grateful.

My highest compliment to her has always been that I would have selected her to be my friend. I selfishly wished she would live to be 100. She being the independent force of nature she is decided to leave us before another winter. Aurelia Joseph Barabino is going to go and live with my father in my heart forever.

On Saturday, July 23 Ma died. I wrote this to my close friends: Thank for all of your prayers and offers of condolences. Ma died peacefully in her sleep today. Her funeral will be in New Orleans.

I am grateful to each of you for being a part of my support system. It did me a great deal of good to simply read your posts and argue politics. I did the best I could by her. I got a chance to say goodbye and to tell her it was okay to leave us. I am hoping that I have her skin genes ( she has silky skin even at 97) and her longevity. Actually, I pray for good health and longevity for you each you and your families too.

First, turn off your cap lock. The United States of America is certainly not broke. The debt ceiling has been raised before without drama when it was Republicans in the White House. The United States of America has had a debt albeit not as horrible as since Ronald Reagan severely increased the debt during his terms. George W. Bush went from a surplus to addition trillions to the debt. That said, America is not broke in fact we are still the richest country in the world what we do have is a financial industry run amuck killing jobs and two wars.

Obviously you have not a clue as to what would happen if we default on our debts. Not only would we in this country would go into an immediate financial downturn shedding even more jobs we would drag the entire world along for that awful ride.

The way out is a second stimulus, a public works program and increasing the tax rate on the top 2 % and corporations. What we need to pull out of the recession is revenue! Employed workers pay taxes (revenue). Workers spend money which means companies have more clients buying things that requires them to hire more people to serve them. Those newly hired? Why they pay taxes too so more revenue for treasury. I challenge you to review your history from 1928 to 1940. It also would not hurt to read up on economics too.

Dang, President Obama is bringing the heat! I confess that he had me scared but like most people my short term political memory is faulty. It seems that I forgot that this is the same guy who got bin Laden (without pre-drama yacking). He has a steady laser beam approach to problems he gets there when the problem is solved. I have no respect for the Republican leadership and see them as the worst hostage taking negotiators in history. I think world leaders of rogue states need to have a heads-up look at our President because they need to recognize He-Who-Is-Tough-And-Relentless takes no prisoners. Today is a good day. I have high hopes that the President will end the drama. Wall Street is impatient and they are ready to pressure their Republic friends to raise the debt ceiling. It is hard to maintain Christian love for such a vile man as Mitch McConnell. He would rather see the American people suffer in order to get rid of President Obama. It is high time that the Democrats stood up for core Democratic ideas and programs. This is the opportunity for Democrats to not resort to deception but to react to the needs and desires of their constituents and in largesse the constituents of the Republicans too, who need Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security to survive.

Senator McConnell needs to grow a heart where those dollars signs exist. The Democrats need to stiffen their spines and join Nancy Pelosi in drawing a line in the sand that says...no mas, no more, enough!

The way out is for a second stimulus and a jobs program to happen. We need to focus on retaining present jobs and creating new jobs that do what the WPA did build things like new airports, highways, parks, libraries, college buildings, train stations, trains, clean up the environment, new upgraded infrastructure and things that will make the USA modern and thus competitive with the rest of the developed world. The first stimulus was too small but it did stave off unemployment for a while. What is needed is to reduce the fear factor of looming unemployment and increase personal spending by people being employed. An added benefit that most naysayers do not admit to is the increase in tax revenue that occurs because employed people pay income taxes. Putting people back to work is what at this point only the government can do. Business is flush and sitting on their money watching the economy sink. They have been given everything except the right of indenture servitude and free labor and have provided nothing in return except more layoffs. We need America working and fast. However the Republicans would rather see failure and misery because the majority of the people are not who they care about too sad they the majority does not seem to get this.

Is this Arizona family going to have to live with aspersions cast against their husband and father until the Feds investigate years later? That they have a reporter actually doing his job may help them most.

A great non-snowy Sunday and no teevee talk shows is has been. My heart goes out to the struggles of the people in Egypt. Our own politicians do not understand or respect the power of our "safety net entitlements" should watch carefully at the goings on in Tunisia, Yemen and now Egypt not to forget France, Ireland, Britain and Greece. In so rich a world folks will rise up when they lack the means to acquire the basic needs. Work and education are a means to acquiring those needs. Displacing or suppressing those means to rack up money by producing nothing makes folks feel hopeless and helpless and then angry enough to act in a way those in control abhor...violent. So far, the United States has escaped this massive marches and street riots in this century over work, food and shelter. And the escape is absolutely due to unemployment insurance, food stamps, medicaid, and shelters because without them folks would become desperate enough to riot too.

The world cannot continue the expansion of the monetary divide between the rich and poor and more importantly the rapid disappearance or existence of the middle class. Profit is good but unchecked greed is not.

This day we celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ. His importance to each of us claiming him as Savior can not be underestimated. He is the rock upon we stand sure in our acceptance of him as Lord and Savior bringer of eternal life. That is a really BIG thing. Yet, amongst all of the crass commercialization of the Advent season it is especially good to remember why Jesus' birth is so special... he brings us hope, joy, peace and life everlasting.

Folks snipe that this day in this month is not actually when Jesus was born. I grant them that information. This is the time of the pagan celebration of winter solstice and a great way to celebrate a religion that was banned and could get you killed when you are in the minority.The point in celebrating the Advent of Jesus' birth is to celebrate the arrival of God's promise in the flesh to save us. Without Jesus we have no eternal life and therefore no reason to celebrate at all.

The best part of celebrating Jesus' birth is that we renew faith in our belief that Jesus is the Light of the World. He brings us peace and comfort. There is joy in knowing that you are loved by him because You are born and he personifies that Trouble Don't Last Always!

My first reaction was a cynical chuckle. My second reaction is sadness. We Christians are held accountable for those non-believers that WE turn away through our words and deeds. Mr. Fischer will have to account for the people who think that Christianity is a farce and misogynistic religion. I am ashamed for him.

The President's description of what heroic acts the Medal of Honor was being honor and yes, it included taking the life of the enemy to save his brother soldier. The Sargent was eloquent and humble in his acceptance. Mr. Fischer is heartless in his criticism.

If it were up to me I would just slash at all of the things that folks are holding out against like Cap and Trade, taxing rich people, reforming SSI, getting rid of expensive 20th century battle ships, plans and gear, showing contractors the door and making sure old people were not sacrificed upon the alter of Hedge Fund Managers.

It would be a brutal budget but by the time I figure I would be dead the country would be well on the way to financial sanity and security.

Hire me Mr. President. I can take the anger and name calling as long as my check clears.

As a young college student I had the chance to meet Muhammad Ali. He was more than gracious to the screaming hoards of girls and the shy fellows who were grateful to be in his presence. Not only is Muhammad Ali a man of his convictions, a very great boxer (my passion), but one of the kindest personable people I have had the honor to meet and believe me I say that about very, very few people.

I want to know where these folks were when Bush was blowing the economy up? I don't recall storms of protests about a war based on a lie. He was President for FOUR years and pretty much f**ked up the country. Two years and escaping a global DEPRESSION, gaining lower taxes, the ability to keep your grown child on your health care plan, able to get health care even if you have a health condition already, and no arbitrary lifetime caps just when you are fighting a catastrophic illness, keep your college kid from selling his/her soul to Sallie Mae for an education, brought us positive global relations, our domestic auto industry is on the way back and a few things else I could list too. Has President Obama done everything you, I and even he wanted? No. Yet, he has done more than many Presidents and especially Bush.
